The American guinea pig is the most common and recognizable breed, the classic short-haired cavy most people picture. Its smooth, close-lying coat requires almost no grooming beyond an occasional brush, which makes it the go-to recommendation for first-time owners and families with children.

Americans are known for their sweet, even temperaments. They warm up to handling quickly, rarely nip, and tend to be vocal, expect cheerful wheeking at the sound of a refrigerator door or a rustling bag of hay.

Coat and grooming

Brush once a week with a soft brush; more often during shedding seasons.
Check nails every few weeks and trim when they start to curl.
Baths are rarely needed. Spot-clean instead, since frequent bathing can dry the skin.

Vitamin C deficiency if the diet lacks fresh vegetables or fortified pellets.
Dental overgrowth when there is not enough hay to wear teeth down.
Respiratory infections, often linked to drafts, dusty bedding or poor ventilation.
Bladder stones, which may be linked to diet and water intake.
