Common questions about guinea pig names

Do guinea pigs know their name?

Guinea pigs can learn to recognize a short, consistent name, especially when it comes with food. They hear tone and rhythm more than the word itself, so pick one or two syllables, say it the same way every time, and pair it with a treat. Most pigs start turning toward their name within a few weeks.

How did guinea pigs get their name?

Nobody knows for sure. They are not from Guinea and they are not pigs. One theory says the name comes from the Guinea trade routes that brought them to Europe in the 1500s; another says they sold for a guinea coin. The pig part likely comes from their round bodies and squeaky, pig-like sounds. Their proper name is cavy, from the South American word cabiai.

What makes a good guinea pig name?

Short and distinct works best. Names ending in a bright vowel sound like Milo, Ruby, or Wheeky are easy for you to call and easy for your pig to pick out of background noise. Many owners name by appearance, personality, or favorite snack. There is no wrong answer as long as you will happily say it at the vet.
