How to Introduce Guinea Pigs Safely

Plan before the first meeting

Confirm both guinea pigs' sex with an experienced rescue or exotic veterinarian before housing them together. Unplanned pregnancies can happen quickly. Quarantine guidance varies by health history, so ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for a new arrival.

Prepare a large neutral area that neither guinea pig considers its territory. Add open-ended tunnels and several piles of hay, but avoid single-exit hides where one pig could trap the other.

The first introduction

• •Place both guinea pigs in the neutral area at the same time.
• •Stay nearby and observe without interrupting every chase or rumble.
• •Expect sniffing, rumbling, mounting, and short periods of chasing as they establish a hierarchy.
• •Keep a towel or dustpan nearby to separate a serious fight without putting your hands between biting animals.

Normal dominance or a real fight?

Rumble-strutting, nose raising, mounting, and brief chasing are often normal. Separate them if they lock into a rolling fight, bite repeatedly, or draw blood. Persistent blocking of food and water also needs attention even without an obvious fight.

After a calm introduction, move both pigs into a thoroughly cleaned enclosure with duplicate resources: multiple hay stations, water sources, bowls, and at least one open-ended hide per pig.

Help the bond settle

Avoid repeatedly separating and reintroducing a pair for minor dominance behavior because this can restart the process. Monitor eating, weight, injuries, and access to resources during the first weeks. Seek help from an experienced rescue or exotic veterinarian if tension does not ease.
