Can Guinea Pigs Eat Cilantro? A Simple Herb Guide
Cilantro (coriander) is a popular, suitable herb for guinea pigs. See how much to offer, how often, and how to fit it into a balanced vegetable mix.
The short answer
Yes. Fresh cilantro, also called coriander, is one of the herbs most guinea pigs can eat regularly as part of a mixed vegetable portion.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
What cilantro offers, and where it falls short
Cilantro is leafy, aromatic and usually very well liked, which makes it handy for encouraging a picky guinea pig to eat greens. It offers some vitamin C and other micronutrients.
Like other leafy greens, it contains calcium. Rotating cilantro with lower-calcium vegetables keeps the overall mix balanced, especially for guinea pigs with a history of bladder sludge or stones.
How much and how often
- A small handful of leaves and stems for an adult.
- Several times a week is generally fine when the rest of the mix varies.
- Combine with other greens rather than serving a large pile of cilantro alone.
How to prepare it
- Rinse well and shake off excess water.
- Serve fresh leaves and soft stems.
- Discard wilted or slimy sprigs.
What to avoid
- Dried cilantro seasoning blends or cilantro in prepared salsa.
- Herbs grown with garden pesticides you cannot verify.
- Making cilantro the only vegetable on offer.
Introduce it slowly
Offer a small piece of cilantro on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
