Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pumpkin? Flesh, Seeds and Leftovers

Guinea pigs can eat a little raw pumpkin flesh. Learn which parts are fine, why seeds and pie filling are not, and how to handle Halloween leftovers.

The short answer

Yes, in small amounts. Fresh, raw pumpkin flesh is suitable for guinea pigs as an occasional food. Seeds, cooked pumpkin and canned pie filling are not.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

What pumpkin offers, and where it falls short

Pumpkin flesh offers fiber and some vitamins, and many guinea pigs enjoy it. It is sweeter and starchier than leafy greens, so a little goes a long way.

Carved decorative pumpkins are a common source of leftovers in autumn. Once a pumpkin has been cut and left out, it can grow mold quickly, so it is not a safe snack.

How much and how often

  • One small cube of raw flesh for an adult.
  • About once a week.
  • Count it alongside other starchy or sweet foods, not on top of them.

How to prepare it

  • Use a fresh pumpkin that has not been carved or displayed.
  • Wash, peel if the skin is very tough, and remove all seeds and stringy pulp.
  • Cut into small raw cubes and remove leftovers the same day.

What to avoid

  • Pumpkin seeds.
  • Cooked, roasted, spiced or canned pumpkin and pie filling.
  • Jack-o'-lanterns or pumpkins that have been sitting out.

Introduce it slowly

Offer a small piece of pumpkin on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
