Can Guinea Pigs Eat Parsley? Vitamin C and Calcium
Parsley is a favorite herb with vitamin C, but it is high in calcium. Learn how much parsley guinea pigs can have and how often.
The short answer
Yes, in moderation. Fresh parsley is popular and offers vitamin C, but it is relatively high in calcium.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
What parsley offers, and where it falls short
Curly and flat-leaf parsley both provide vitamin C and strong flavor that encourages eating.
Calcium content means it belongs in rotation, especially for guinea pigs with urinary issues.
How much and how often
- A small sprig for an adult.
- Two or three times a week.
- Rotate with lower-calcium herbs and greens.
How to prepare it
- Rinse well and shake dry.
- Serve fresh leaves and soft stems.
- Discard wilted sprigs.
What to avoid
- Dried seasoning blends or herbs in prepared food.
- Making one herb the whole vegetable portion.
- Herbs sprayed with pesticides.
Introduce it slowly
Offer a small piece of parsley on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
