Can Guinea Pigs Eat Basil? How Much Is Safe

Guinea pigs can eat fresh basil occasionally. Learn how much basil to offer, how often and how to prepare it.

The short answer

Yes, occasionally. Fresh basil leaves are suitable in small amounts.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

What basil offers, and where it falls short

Basil adds variety and aroma, and some guinea pigs love it.

It is fairly high in calcium, so keep it to small portions.

How much and how often

  • Two or three leaves for an adult.
  • Once or twice a week.
  • Rotate with other herbs.

How to prepare it

  • Rinse well and shake dry.
  • Serve fresh leaves and soft stems.
  • Discard wilted sprigs.

What to avoid

  • Dried seasoning blends or herbs in prepared food.
  • Making one herb the whole vegetable portion.
  • Herbs sprayed with pesticides.

Introduce it slowly

Offer a small piece of basil on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
