Piggy Cardboard Enrichment: Inspect Boxes Before Play

Choose and inspect simple piggy cardboard shelters and foraging items without adding tape, sharp fittings or trapping hazards.

Simple is easier to inspect

A plain cardboard box can offer cover and exploration without complicated equipment. RSPCA Victoria includes cardboard boxes among enrichment options. Choose an item you can inspect inside and out rather than a decorated package with hidden fittings or an unknown coating.

Remove tape, plastic film, staples, handles and loose packaging material before the box reaches the enclosure. Do not use packaging contaminated by chemicals or food residue. A box being free does not make it appropriate for chewing or resting in.

Fit the animal, not the picture

Openings should allow the piggy to enter and leave comfortably. Avoid narrow tubes or holes that require squeezing, and check whether a larger companion could become stuck. An item that fits a young piggy needs reassessment as the animal grows.

Provide more than one clear way out when a shelter could be blocked by another piggy. Keep it at ground level and stable. Do not stack boxes into climbing towers or allow a cardboard roof to substitute for secure pen boundaries.

Use food without making access difficult

Foraging should add interest, not make essential feeding harder. A quieter or less mobile piggy may not approach a new object immediately. Do not assume that the most active animal's enthusiasm means the whole group can use the setup safely.

  • Offer suitable hay in an open, easy-to-reach arrangement.
  • Keep an ordinary accessible hay supply available as well.
  • Avoid sealing food inside containers that require a puzzle to open.
  • Observe every piggy using the item.
  • Remove anything that collapses or traps an animal.

Treat cardboard as replaceable

Check beneath and inside boxes during spot cleaning. Remove cardboard when it becomes wet, heavily soiled, structurally weak or damaged in a way that creates hazards. It is not a washable permanent fixture, and a fresh-looking roof can conceal dirty bedding underneath.

Keep suitable replacement shelter ready so cleaning does not leave piggies without cover. If an animal becomes trapped, is injured or seems unwell after chewing unfamiliar packaging, seek veterinary advice. Wheeky Guide supports enrichment choices, but supervision and direct observation remain essential.
