Guinea Pig Vet Visit Checklist: What to Bring and Record
Prepare for an exotic vet appointment with a clear symptom timeline, weight history, diet details and accurate medication records.
Find the right clinic before you need it
Ask whether the clinic regularly treats guinea pigs and how it handles urgent appointments and out-of-hours cases. Guinea pigs have species-specific dietary and medication needs. Knowing where to call in advance is more useful than trying to research clinics while your animal is already unwell.
Routine checkups can help your vet establish an individual baseline. Ask what schedule is appropriate for age and health. Guinea pigs generally do not require routine vaccinations; do not assume a vaccine category in a record-keeping app means an annual vaccine is needed.
Prepare a short, factual history
Photos or short videos of an intermittent symptom can help when it is not visible during the appointment. They do not replace an examination. Call the clinic to ask whether it wants a sample and how to collect or store it; do not delay an urgent visit while gathering perfect records.
- When the change began and whether it is improving or worsening.
- Recent weights with dates, rather than just the latest number.
- What the pig normally eats and what they are eating now.
- Changes in droppings, urination, drinking, breathing or movement.
- Current prescribed medicines, their exact label details and the times given.
- Previous diagnoses, procedures and relevant clinic paperwork.
Make transport comfortable
Use a secure, ventilated carrier with absorbent bedding and suitable hay. Protect it from heat, cold and direct sunlight, and keep the journey calm. Ask the clinic whether a bonded companion should travel too and how to arrange that safely.
Do not fast a guinea pig unless the treating veterinarian specifically directs it. Tell the clinic promptly if the pig has stopped eating, has noticeably reduced droppings or is struggling to breathe. Those details can change the urgency of the appointment.
Record the plan before leaving
Write down the diagnosis or working explanation, medication instructions, follow-up date and signs that should trigger another call. If anything is unclear, ask the clinic to clarify while you are there. Keep prescribed doses and routes exactly as directed; do not calculate a substitute from online advice.
Piggy Planner can keep each pig's vet records alongside their weight history. Save a brief factual summary and retain original prescription labels and clinic documents separately. Record keeping supports communication, but it does not confirm a diagnosis. An app entry should never override a veterinarian's instructions or delay emergency care.
