Guinea Pig Sounds at Night: What Is Normal

Guinea pigs are active in short bursts day and night. Learn which night-time guinea pig sounds are normal and which ones to check.

What you are hearing

Guinea pigs do not sleep through the night. They take short naps and stay active in bursts, so you may hear them eating, moving and chatting after dark.

Normal night-time sounds

  • Chewing hay and drinking.
  • Chutting and moving around the cage.
  • Occasional rumbling between cage mates.
  • Wheeking when they hear you get up.

How to keep nights calm

  • Make sure hay and water are full before bed.
  • Keep the cage away from bedrooms if noise bothers you, but in a comfortable room.
  • Avoid sudden bright lights or loud noises near the cage.

When to contact a vet

  • You hear squealing, wheezing or clicking breathing at night.
  • Morning checks show uneaten food or fewer droppings.

Sound in context

Sounds are only one clue. Read them together with body language, the situation and what is normal for your own guinea pig. Wheeky Identifier's Sound Translator can help you record and compare sounds, but a sudden change in vocal behavior alongside reduced appetite, fewer droppings or hunched posture needs an exotic vet, not an app.

For an overview of every common sound, see our complete guide to guinea pig sounds and meanings in the Care Library.
