Fruits Guinea Pigs Can Eat (and How Often)

A list of fruits guinea pigs can eat as treats, with what to remove and how often. Fruit is sugary, so portions stay small.

How to use this list

Fruit is a treat, not a food group. Offer one small piece a few times a week at most, and only one fruit per day.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Popular, easy treats

  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Apples, seeds removed
  • Pears, seeds removed

Juicy fruits, small pieces

  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew melon
  • Grapes, halved

Sweet or acidic, keep rare

  • Bananas
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Oranges
  • Kiwi
  • Papaya
  • Peaches, plums, cherries and apricots, pits removed

Usually skipped

  • Grapefruit
  • Dried fruit of any kind
  • Canned fruit in syrup

Check before you feed

Each food has its own guide in the Care Library with portions, preparation and what to avoid. Wheeky Identifier's Food Scanner can also check suitability, vitamin C and serving guidance in one place.

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
