Cavy Emergency Evacuation Kit: Pack Before You Need to Leave

Prepare cavy carriers, familiar food, water equipment, records and a safe destination before an evacuation or household emergency.

Choose the destination as well as the bag

An emergency kit is only part of an evacuation plan. Identify somewhere that can safely accommodate cavies, and confirm any rules before you need it. A shelter or hotel accepting pets may have restrictions on species or enclosure arrangements.

SPCA International recommends preparing a grab-and-go kit ahead of time rather than risking safety to collect supplies during an emergency. Decide who gathers the animals, where carriers are kept and how you will travel. Follow local emergency instructions and do not delay leaving an unsafe building to finish packing.

Pack familiar essentials

Choose quantities around local emergency guidance and the likely length of disruption. Keep food dry and review dates regularly. A sealed kit forgotten for years may contain unusable supplies when you finally need it.

  • Secure ventilated carriers with suitable absorbent bedding.
  • Usable suitable grass hay and familiar appropriate pellets.
  • Water and working bowls or bottles with necessary fittings.
  • Spare bedding and waste bags for temporary care.
  • Prescribed medicines in their labelled packaging.
  • Veterinary contacts, identification photographs and relevant records.

Check the transport plan

Keep carriers stable and protected from heat, cold and falling luggage. Plan safe arrangements for bonded companions with enough space and any individual medical requirements in mind. Never place a carrier in a parked vehicle and assume the animals will remain comfortable while you make other arrangements.

Pack information that another caregiver can use: which cavy is which, the established diet and exact prescribed medication instructions. Do not include unprescribed treatments or plan to start syringe feeding without veterinary direction. Equipment alone does not make an unfamiliar procedure safe.

Restore care at the temporary location

Set up secure housing, accessible hay and water, suitable shelter and comfortable bedding as soon as possible. Observe each cavy eating and producing droppings. Keep the room away from fumes, other pets and extreme temperatures, and contact a clinic if an animal becomes unwell.

Piggy Planner can help keep vet records and care tasks together, but retain an accessible written backup for disrupted phone access. Not eating, severe weakness or breathing difficulty need urgent veterinary contact. The kit supports continuity during a crisis; it cannot prevent every health problem or replace professional care.
