Can Guinea Pigs Eat Potatoes? No, Not Raw or Cooked

Potatoes are unsuitable for guinea pigs. Learn why potato skins, green parts and cooked potatoes should be avoided.

The short answer

No. Potatoes, including skins, peelings, green parts and cooked potatoes, are not suitable for guinea pigs.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Why potato is not suitable

Raw potatoes, especially green parts, sprouts and leaves, contain solanine, which can be toxic.

Cooked potatoes, chips and fries are starchy, often salted or fried, and not suitable for guinea pig digestion.

If your guinea pig ate some

  • Remove any remaining food.
  • Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
  • Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
  • Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.

Better choices

  • Bell pepper for vitamin C.
  • Romaine or leaf lettuce.
  • Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
  • Unlimited grass hay.

A note on safety

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
