Can Guinea Pigs Eat Onions? No, Here Is Why
Onions are toxic to guinea pigs. Learn why onions, leeks, chives and spring onions should never be fed and what to do if eaten.
The short answer
No. Onions and related plants such as leeks, chives, shallots and spring onions should never be fed to guinea pigs.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
Why onion is not suitable
The onion family contains compounds that can damage red blood cells in many animals.
This includes raw, cooked and powdered forms, so foods seasoned with onion are unsuitable too.
If your guinea pig ate some
- Remove any remaining food.
- Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
- Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
- Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.
Better choices
- Bell pepper for vitamin C.
- Romaine or leaf lettuce.
- Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
- Unlimited grass hay.
A note on safety
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
