Can Guinea Pigs Eat Nuts and Seeds? Why to Avoid Them

Nuts and seeds are not suitable for guinea pigs. Learn why they are a choking risk and too high in fat.

The short answer

No. Nuts, seeds and seed mixes are not suitable for guinea pigs.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Why nuts and seeds is not suitable

Nuts and seeds are high in fat and can be a choking hazard.

Seed-based treat mixes encourage selective feeding and are not designed for guinea pig nutrition.

If your guinea pig ate some

  • Remove any remaining food.
  • Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
  • Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
  • Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.

Better choices

  • Plain guinea pig pellets without seeds or colored pieces.
  • Fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Unlimited grass hay.

A note on safety

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
