Can Guinea Pigs Eat Grass? Fresh Grass vs Clippings
Guinea pigs can eat fresh grass, but never lawnmower clippings. Learn how to introduce grass safely and avoid digestive upset.
The short answer
Yes. Fresh, untreated grass is a natural food for guinea pigs, but introduce it gradually and never feed lawnmower clippings.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
What grass offers, and where it falls short
Grass is high in fiber and close to what wild cavies eat.
A sudden switch to lots of fresh grass can upset digestion, and clippings ferment quickly.
How much and how often
- Start with a small handful and build up over weeks.
- Hand-pick or let guinea pigs graze in a safe, supervised run.
- Keep hay available at all times.
How to prepare it
- Pick only from areas free of pesticides, fertilizer, road traffic and dog walking.
- Make sure you can identify the plant with confidence.
- Wash and serve fresh; never offer lawnmower clippings.
What to avoid
- Plants you cannot identify for certain.
- Plants from roadsides, sprayed lawns or dog-walking areas.
- Lawnmower clippings, which ferment quickly.
Introduce it slowly
Offer a small piece of grass on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
