Can Guinea Pigs Eat Garlic? No, Avoid It Completely
Garlic is toxic to guinea pigs in any form. Learn why garlic is dangerous and what to do if your guinea pig eats some.
The short answer
No. Garlic should never be fed to guinea pigs, raw, cooked, powdered or in supplements.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
Why garlic is not suitable
Garlic belongs to the onion family and contains compounds that can damage red blood cells.
Seasoned human foods often contain garlic powder, another reason to keep table food away.
If your guinea pig ate some
- Remove any remaining food.
- Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
- Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
- Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.
Better choices
- Bell pepper for vitamin C.
- Romaine or leaf lettuce.
- Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
- Unlimited grass hay.
A note on safety
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
