Can Guinea Pigs Eat Chocolate? No, It Is Toxic

Chocolate is toxic to guinea pigs. Learn why and what to do if your guinea pig eats any chocolate.

The short answer

No. Chocolate is toxic to guinea pigs and should never be offered.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Why chocolate is not suitable

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are harmful to many animals.

It is also high in sugar and fat. Any sweets and candy should be kept away from guinea pigs.

If your guinea pig ate some

  • Remove any remaining food.
  • Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
  • Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
  • Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.

Better choices

  • A small piece of fresh fruit as an occasional treat.
  • Herbs and leafy greens.
  • Hay-based treats made for guinea pigs.

A note on safety

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
