Can Guinea Pigs Eat Cheese or Dairy? No, Here Is Why
Guinea pigs should not eat cheese, milk, yogurt or other dairy. Learn why their digestion cannot handle it.
The short answer
No. Cheese, milk, yogurt drops and other dairy products are not suitable for adult guinea pigs.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
Why dairy is not suitable
Guinea pigs are herbivores and adult digestion is not designed for dairy.
Yogurt drops sold as treats are often high in sugar and fat.
If your guinea pig ate some
- Remove any remaining food.
- Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
- Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
- Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.
Better choices
- Bell pepper for vitamin C.
- Romaine or leaf lettuce.
- Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
- Unlimited grass hay.
A note on safety
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
