Can Guinea Pigs Eat Broccoli? Florets, Stems and Gas
Guinea pigs can eat small amounts of raw broccoli. Learn why it can cause gas, the right portion and how often to offer florets and stems.
The short answer
Yes, in small amounts. Raw broccoli is a good vitamin C source, but it can cause gas, so keep portions small.
Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.
What broccoli offers, and where it falls short
Broccoli is rich in vitamin C compared with many vegetables, which makes it useful in rotation.
Like other brassicas, it can cause gas and bloating, which is uncomfortable and can be serious for guinea pigs. It also contains some calcium.
How much and how often
- One small floret or a few thin slices of stem for an adult.
- Two or three times a week.
- Introduce it very gradually.
How to prepare it
- Wash well.
- Serve raw; leaves and stems are fine.
- Chop into small pieces.
What to avoid
- Cooked, buttered or seasoned broccoli.
- Large servings or broccoli with other gassy vegetables on the same day.
- Yellowing or soft florets.
Introduce it slowly
Offer a small piece of broccoli on its own the first time, then watch droppings and appetite over the next day. Change one food at a time so you can tell what caused any upset. Wheeky apps can help you keep track of new foods, servings and vitamin C sources in one place.
If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
