Can Guinea Pigs Eat Bread? Why It Is a No

Bread is not suitable for guinea pigs. Learn why bread, crackers and cereals can upset their digestion.

The short answer

No. Bread, crackers, cereals and other baked goods are not suitable for guinea pigs.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Why bread is not suitable

These foods are high in starch and often contain sugar, salt or fat, with little of the fiber guinea pigs need.

They can upset the gut balance and contribute to weight gain.

If your guinea pig ate some

  • Remove any remaining food.
  • Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
  • Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
  • Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.

Better choices

  • Bell pepper for vitamin C.
  • Romaine or leaf lettuce.
  • Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
  • Unlimited grass hay.

A note on safety

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
