Can Guinea Pigs Eat Avocado? No, Here Is Why

Avocado is unsafe for guinea pigs. Learn why the flesh, skin, pit and leaves should be avoided.

The short answer

No. Avocado flesh, skin, pit and leaves should not be fed to guinea pigs.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Why avocado is not suitable

Avocado contains persin, which can be harmful to many animals, and it is very high in fat.

The pit is also a choking hazard.

If your guinea pig ate some

  • Remove any remaining food.
  • Note what was eaten and roughly how much.
  • Watch appetite, droppings and behavior closely.
  • Contact an exotic vet for advice, especially if more than a tiny amount was eaten or any symptoms appear.

Better choices

  • Bell pepper for vitamin C.
  • Romaine or leaf lettuce.
  • Fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill.
  • Unlimited grass hay.

A note on safety

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
