Best Vegetables for Guinea Pigs: A Daily Rotation List

A practical list of the best vegetables for guinea pigs, grouped into daily, a few times a week and occasional foods.

How to use this list

Variety matters more than any single vegetable. Build a daily cup of mixed vegetables from the lists below.

Unlimited grass hay, fresh water, a measured amount of guinea pig pellets and a daily cup or so of mixed, suitable vegetables form the core diet. Any single vegetable or fruit is one part of that mix, never a replacement for hay.

Good everyday choices

  • Bell peppers (all colors)
  • Romaine and leaf lettuces
  • Cilantro
  • Bok choy, in moderation
  • Zucchini
  • Cucumber, small amounts

A few times a week

  • Parsley
  • Dill
  • Arugula
  • Carrot tops
  • Celery and celery leaves
  • Green beans
  • Asparagus
  • Dandelion greens

Occasional only

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Beet greens
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Carrots
  • Peas and snap peas

Check before you feed

Each food has its own guide in the Care Library with portions, preparation and what to avoid. Wheeky Identifier's Food Scanner can also check suitability, vitamin C and serving guidance in one place.

If your guinea pig stops eating, has diarrhea, produces fewer droppings or seems bloated or quiet after a food change, contact an exotic vet promptly. This guide is general education, not veterinary advice.
